SAN DIEGO AFTER DARK

Things to Do at Night in San Diego

Looking for something to do after the sun goes down? San Diego has plenty of options beyond simply heading to a bar. Spend an evening by the water, explore one of the city's neighborhoods, see a live performance, catch an outdoor movie, or make dinner just the beginning of the night.

Whether you're planning a date night in San Diego, entertaining visitors, going out with friends, or just looking for a change from the usual routine, here are some of the best ways to spend an evening in the city.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

See a Live Comedy Show

A live show gives you something streaming at home can't: an evening that only happens once. And in improv comedy, even the performers don't know exactly what's going to happen.

At National Comedy Theatre, every performance is created live using suggestions from the audience. The result is a fast-paced, interactive comedy show that's different every night. NCT has been performing in San Diego since 1999, with more than 7,000 performances on its stage.

Shows are appropriate for a wide range of audiences, making live comedy an easy choice for a night out with friends, visiting family, or a date that doesn't involve staring at each other across a table for three hours.

THE WATERFRONT

Spend an Evening on San Diego Bay

San Diego looks particularly good after sunset, and you don't need much of a plan to enjoy an evening along the waterfront.

Walk along the Embarcadero, watch the lights come on across the bay, or take the ferry between downtown and Coronado. The waterfront is an easy way to spend an hour or two before or after dinner without committing to a full evening's itinerary.

If you'd rather be on the water than beside it, evening harbor cruises offer another view of the downtown skyline. Local operators such as Flagship Cruises & Events offer sunset and dinner cruises on San Diego Bay.

EXPLORE THE CITY

Explore a San Diego Neighborhood After Dinner

One of the easiest ways to stretch dinner into a full night out is to choose a neighborhood where there's somewhere to walk after the check arrives.

Little Italy is an obvious choice for restaurants, dessert and an evening stroll. North Park offers bars, restaurants and live entertainment in a compact area, while the Gaslamp Quarter puts you in the middle of downtown nightlife.

Closer to National Comedy Theatre, Mission Hills offers a quieter night out and makes it easy to combine dinner with a show. Nearby options include Fort Oak and Farmers Bottega, with Gelato Vero Caffè nearby for dessert afterward.

04
LIVE PERFORMANCE

Catch Live Music, Theatre or a Performance

Comedy isn't the only way to see San Diego come alive at night. The city has an active live-performance scene that ranges from intimate music venues to theatre, concerts and touring productions.

Downtown, Balboa Park, North Park and other neighborhoods regularly host evening performances, making it easy to build a night around something happening onstage rather than simply choosing another bar.

If you're planning ahead, check current performance calendars before you go. Many venues rotate shows frequently, so the options can change from week to week.

BALBOA PARK

Experience Balboa Park After Dark

Balboa Park feels completely different after sunset. The architecture, plazas and gardens take on a quieter atmosphere, and museums and cultural organizations regularly schedule evening programs and special events.

Hours vary by museum and event, so check the Balboa Park calendar and current hours before planning your evening. Even without a specific event, the park can be a great place for an evening walk.

06
OUTDOOR MOVIES

See a Movie Under the Stars

San Diego's mild evenings make outdoor movies an easy night out. One local option is Cinema Under the Stars, an intimate outdoor movie venue in Mission Hills.

It's particularly convenient if you're building an evening around this part of San Diego, and the schedule changes throughout the year, so check current films and showtimes before heading out.

07
FOOD & DRINK

Turn Dinner Into the Activity

Dinner doesn't have to be the part of the night you rush through before doing something else. Choose a neighborhood where the meal, dessert and walk afterward can become part of the evening itself.

Little Italy, Convoy, North Park, Old Town and Mission Hills all offer very different versions of a San Diego night out, depending on the pace you're looking for.

DATE NIGHT

Plan a Date Night in San Diego

A good date night doesn't need an elaborate itinerary. Dinner, something live, a walk or dessert afterward is often enough to make the evening feel like more than just another meal out.
