I genuinely do not know the person I would be if I never started taking improv classes. My entire life I’ve been a very anxious person. Though I try my very best to mask it, it has always been a struggle since I was very young. In 2014 I stumbled upon a video compilation on YouTube of the funniest clips from “Whose Line is it Anyway?” and I instantly was hooked. The way they all seemed so confident, and came up with comebacks and quips so easily. Any anxiety ridden drama kid would be hooked. I knew that I wanted to be just like them. A quick google search on “How do I do improv like Colin Mochrie” and I stumbled upon the NCT Website. That Christmas my parents gave me the gift of improv classes from NCT. The first class I took I was so nervous, I had no idea what to expect. My instructor asked us at the beginning of class what we wanted to get out of it. Half of the students had responded with “my mom wanted me to get out of the house”, but when I told him I wanted to overcome my fears and be more confident my teacher took on the challenge. I ended up taking that class about 6 times, and each time the improv got more advanced and I became so focused on the classes that the anxiety just melted away.

Fast forward to now, I’m on the Sunday Company and I get the privilege of performing for a different crowd every week. Improv is one of the few moments in my life where the anxiety goes away. I’m completely immersed in the task at hand, all I have to do is listen, tune into my teammates and commit. Improv is truly one of the most therapeutic activities someone can do in my personal opinion. Of course I still get the pre-show jitters, but my teammates do a great job at hyping me up. I take a deep breath, the lights go down, the applause starts and the fear goes away instantly. Once the show starts, the feeling of an entire room laughing at something you said is just the BEST. I’ve found that applying the basics of improv to my everyday life has changed my life for the better. If it weren’t for improv I wouldn’t have met some of my best friends, I wouldn’t have met my partner. If it weren’t for taking improv classes I wouldn’t be a content creator. Improv changed the way I communicate with people, the way I navigate. Things that would make me so beyond nervous like job interviews or callbacks are now super easy…as long as I approach it like I would an improv scene. And when I tell people that I have suffered from anxiety in the past they typically don’t believe me, which I guess is a good thing. I guess it means that improv helped me navigate my way through anxiety.
